A new state-of-the-art training surface has been installed at a historic cricket ground.

The new TP365 Match surface will double the number of players who can train in the nets at East Lancashire Cricket Club at any one time.

It aims to assist players of all ages as the club looks to improve facilities at the ground in Dukes Brow, Blackburn.

The TP365 was one of the first non-turf cricket surfaces to be awarded ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) approval.

The 'Total Play' surface is described having a 'dynamic base' with 'excellent drainage, optimum performance characteristics along with minimal maintenance'.

Abid Ditta, who is the new chairman at the club, said: “The cricket nets are being used throughout the week and this was really important for the players.

“It gets really busy through the summer months and this will mean more people can train at any one time.

“The club has a lot of young players coming through and this will be of great benefit to up-and-coming players.

“As any cricketer knows, practice on a high-quality surface can make a big difference to your game. We hope to put the new surface to good use.”

The improvements were made possible through support from Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Executive Member for Growth and Development, Councillor Quesir Mahmood, said: “It is great to support the local community and the future stars of cricket in this way.

“We are sure the improvements will benefit the residents of the borough.”

Founded in 1864 by officers of the East Lancashire Regiment, East Lancs Cricket Club is one of the oldest in the region and its location also hosted some early Blackburn Rovers games.

The club has three open age men's teams, and 12 junior teams ranging from under nines to under 15s, and is also home to bowls and squash alongside cricket.
