Premarital sex in India remains a taboo subject. However, StayUncle is India’s first website dedicated to counter the dilemmas that beleaguered unmarried couples face by allowing them to book hotel rooms discreetly.

StayUncle, established in New Delhi, allows unmarried couples to book a room discreetly for 10 hours.

The description on the website says, “Couples need a Room, not a Judgment.”

The website further assures customer of “absolute safety, no judgment and completely secure from harassment and all other bullshit.”

Speaking to BBC World, a couple from Delhi who withheld their identity for fear of their safety said, "Making love in our country specifically, very much has to be planned.

"You have to pick a day. You have to pick four or five hours in a night cook up a story like you are going to your friend's place. It's a headache."

Testimonials on the website and messages on the StayUncle Facebook page affirm the high demand for this facility.

One customer said, “Thank you uncle. 8 times without interruption. Great day!”

Prior to discovering StayUncle, one unmarried couple meticulously planned a furtive night away together with the young woman planning to ‘disguise myself as a married woman with sindoor and bangles and salwar suit.’ Queries to StayUncle come from all manner of couples including one looking for a discreet way to spend time with his married girlfriend.

“Hi I am staying in Mumbai. I am married and have extra marital with my college friend who is also married. We are into relationship since long. “Want to spend some time in one of your hotels. We are afraid and don’t want embarrassment.”

Speaking to Quartz India, CEO and co-founder of StayUncle, Sanchit Sethi explained the ethos behind the website.

“We don’t live in the 1950s anymore. What we are trying to do is change the mindset of hoteliers.”

Sethi spoke not only of the social challenges but also of those from within the industry.

“Out of 10 hotels we speak to, only two or three eventually sign up. This is a new industry and people often see this as going against the culture of the country and there is always the fear of moral policing.”

Whilst an element of controversy surrounds such a bold venture, there is no doubt there is a thriving market for the service.

“Finally got the courage to book a room…you guys really are the harbingers of free thinking in India…My and my gal got the privacy we wanted and I’ll just quote her here, ‘It was one of the best days of her life.’ Although the credit for most of that does go to my skills.”
