A drink-driver who ploughed into the back of a lorry killing her sister-in-law has been jailed for four years.

Zakia Akhtar was drunk and speeding when she crashed her Vauxhall Corsa into a stationary HGV and ended up killing front-seat passenger 25-year-old Mobeen Hussain.

Staffordshire Police said 30-year-old Akhtar, of Stoke-on-Trent, had completely disregarded the safety of her own family member and other road users.

She was jailed at the city's crown court on Wednesday with police calling the sentence a "stark warning" to other drivers who choose to flout the law.

Akhtar, of Grove Street, Stoke, who was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, was breathalysed hours after the crash and still found to have been almost twice the legal drink-drive limit.

The accident happened in Clough Street in the Hanley area at 7.35pm on January 8.

After sentencing, Sergeant Rich Moors, police collision investigator, said: "Mobeen's death was a direct result of Akhtar's driving and she must now face the consequences of her actions.

"She was found to have excessive alcohol in her system and was speeding, completely disregarding the safety of her passenger and other road users."

Akhtar was also banned from driving for four years and must complete an extended re-test beforehand.
