Rosena Allin-Khan, an emergency doctor at St George's Hospital, has become the new MP for Tooting.

The Labour candidate, who has been a councillor for two years in Wandsworth, polled more than 17,000 votes on June 16 and increased Labour's majority in the seat to more than 6,000.

She beat 13 other candidates, including Dan Watkins, the Conservative, who polled more than 11,000 votes.

In light of the tragic death of Jo Cox in West Yorkshire, Dr Allin-Khan issued a short speech.

Dr Allin-Khan said: "First of all, I would like to give my profound thanks to the people of Tooting for electing me as their MP.

"But my thoughts and prayers are with Jo's husband and children.

"She was a proud and passionate campaigner who will be desperately missed.

"Jo's death reminds us that our democracy is precious but fragile.

"Never forget to cherish it.

"Thousands of people voted today and we are all here in recognition of our democratic values."

Dr Allin-Khan then went on to thank the police, her family, the returning officer and her campaign team.

Mr Watkins, the Conservative candidate, also gave a short speech thanking his family, campaign team and offering his condolences to the family of Mrs Cox.

The victory for Dr Allin-Khan means Wandsworth is now represented entirely by female MPs.
