There were 12 MPs who opposed the motion urging the Government to recognise the state of Palestine.

They included six Conservatives, who were: Bob Blackman (Harrow East), Jonathan Djanogly (Huntingdon), Mike Freer (Finchley), Nigel Mills (Amber Valley), Matthew Offord (Hendon) and Robert Syms (Poole).

One Liberal Democrat, Sir Alan Beith (Berwick-upon-Tweed), voted against.

Five DUP MPs, Nigel Dodds (North Belfast), William McCrae (South Antrim), Ian Paisley (North Antrim), Jim Shannon (Strangford) and David Simpson (Upper Bann), also opposed the motion.

Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn (Islington North) and Mike Wood (Batley and Spen) acted as No tellers but on a point of order, Mr Corbyn explained this was because none of the MPs planning to vote no were willing to do so.

He said the Labour pair had played the role of teller to ensure "democracy could take place and Members could record their vote" even though they strongly supported the motion.

The bulk of the 274 Aye votes came from the Labour Party. Two members of the SDLP, Mark Durkan (Foyle) and Margaret Ritchie (Down South), backed the motion, joined by Alliance MP Naomi Long (Belfast East) and Independent Lady Sylvia Hermon (Down North).

Green MP Caroline Lucas (Brighton Pavilion) backed the motion.

Independent Mike Hancock (Portsmouth South) also backed the motion.
