Ambulance apology after driver said he could not take Bradford woman Sanika Hussain to right hospital wing

Ambulance chiefs have apologised after a young woman was abandoned by a driver at the wrong part of a hospital only weeks after she underwent major surgery on her legs.

Sanika Hussain, who has a condition called hypochondroplasia – a form of dwarfism, made the decision to have leg-lengthening surgery after years of being bullied about her height.

Her legs were broken and pins were inserted to add extra inches to her 4ft 10in stature. She must wear frames around her legs for at least a year.

A month after her eight-hour operation she was due for a check-up at Leeds General Infirmary and had arranged transport from her home, in High Poplars, off Kings Road, Bradford, with Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Miss Hussain, 20, said she was dropped off at the hospital’s Martin Wing, a ten-minute walk from where her appointment was booked in the Clarendon Wing.

She said: “I said this is the wrong place and he said he was running ten minutes late and there was nothing he could do about it.

“We didn’t know where to go. My uncle helped me into the department.”

Miss Hussain, accompanied by her uncle Bobby Rashid, was given assistance by staff in the Martin Wing and she was loaned a wheelchair to make her own way to the other side of the hospital. She said: “It made me feel mad. It’s not our problem, it is his problem if he’s running late, he should have taken the time because that’s his job.

“It’s really frustrating not being able to walk much. I don’t need it really and I hope it doesn’t happen to anybody else.”

Mr Rashid said the pair’s protests about being left at the wrong wing were “completely ignored” by the driver.

Sarah Fatchett, Patient Transport Service operations director at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: “We are committed to providing high-quality non-emergency transport to patients and would like to apologise once again to Miss Hussain for the distress caused. I have been in touch with Miss Hussain directly to discuss her specific concerns and we will be looking into the matter further and addressing the issues raised.”

Why moan about something like this, the ambulance drivers have enough to do, he was making sure to try and not make anybody else late, otherwise the knock on effect will get worse, she got a wheelchair didn't she? some people just moan about anything, there are more people worse off than you where it might be an emergency, why couldnt you get a taxi or a lift from a friend like most other people do....

I would seriously doubt that she could get into a taxi or a private car.

Hmm, maybe not, fair point, but there's no need to go to the telegraph with the story...

Come on now Doris their was no need for that, can you not see the poor girl looks really sad so what if she wants to add a few inches to her height.

She should not have gone to the T&A with the story i agree with that she should class herself as lucky to get an ambulance to take her to her appointment, i just think shes letting of a bit of steam shes annoyed with what had happened.

Lets not pick on her because of her condition thats just not fair now is it.

**Private Ambulance Hire 020 84418122 With Qualified Medical Crews***

or else ring your local taxi base and see if they have taxis suitable for physically challenged people. ie with ramps etc.......

It that time of year and the Ambulance and police are bogged down with emergencies, they surley dont need this nonsense!

We need to thank our lucky stars we have a NHS system and a free ambulance service! look at those countries that dont, people walk days and miles to get to hospitals in some countries despite their disabilities ....

so, Miss Hussain, in the future i say make alternative arrangements for your transport plenty of alternatives out there , just search them on the internet , or would you like the already over stretched NHS to do that for you ?

Why does every story turn into a race issue with some people (bent_meister, angrey reader ) just to name 2.

I am shocked at the comments made about this girl in some posts, this is not about you lot this is about her some of the things i dont agree with yes she should have organized her own transport ie taxi or ambulance they are taxi firms out their that have wheelchair **** with a ramp.

And the story does say she had her uncle with her why could he not sort something out before the appointment i do agree that some people use the ambulance service as a taxi ride its free so why should they care.

I recently went with my friend to the LGI (she was involved in a RTA) i was talking to the ambulance crew they told me that some people just call them out of a fri/sat night after a few too many with no money for taxi and expect them to take them home those idiots she have to pay for the call up, that should be the law if you waste the time of ambulance/police and A&E departments you should pay for it.

because its free people the advantage you would not be able to do that if you lived in the states.

Excuse me RaRa, which part of my comments (2) mention anything at all to do with race? I am not sure you have read my comments correctly as the first one was written specifically to tell BM that her language was atrocious and unnecessary and my second comment was to answer her reasons for using disgusting language and then to give my views on the above story. You need to apologise to me as I have not once insulted anyone especially about their race? I don't mind being attacked but at least make sure you do it for the right reasons!
