Bradford’s cab-driving acting sensation Mehmood Sultan will be back on the big screen next month in a new Pakistani blockbuster.

Mr Sultan, 66, was flown out to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, last April for filming for the new film Azaadi, an all-action war thriller based on the ongoing Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan.

The cabbie, from Chellow Dene, plays an Islamic scholar in the film which will be released worldwide following the end of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, on Thursday, June 14.

He is appearing alongside big names in the Pakistani film industry Sonya Hussain, Nadeem Baig and Moammar Rana in the film which has been written, produced and directed by Imran Malik.

It is the latest role in a long line of cinematic appearances for the grandfather of four, who works as a private hire driver when he is not appearing in front of the camera.

His most recent role saw him star in the film Lies We Tell alongside Hollywood heavyweights Harvey Keitel and Gabriel Byrne, which was shot extensively in Bradford.

He has appeared in countless films and TV dramas both in the UK and abroad since the 1970s, and Mr Sultan said he has some more roles in the pipeline.

He said: “Filming was in Bangkok last year.

“They called me especially for the role and I was flown out there for filming.”

While out in Thailand, Mr Sultan got to mingle with the film’s stars and production staff, getting the chance to see his co-stars practicing their lines and dance routines from behind-the-scenes.

The storyline of Azaadi sees the character of Nadeem Baig, Azaadi’s father, who has devoted his life to the fight for Kashmir, imparting his vision to the youth to keep the fight alive.

Moammar Rana plays the eponymous Azaadi, while Sonya Hussain stars as Zara, a Pakistani-born British journalist.

Imran Malik, the films director, was full of praise for his Bradfordian star Mr Sultan.

He said: “Mr Sultan plays a very important role in the film and did a great job.

“He is a very senior actor in Pakistan and in the UK, and it was a great pleasure to work with him.

“He has a unique personality and is a very public character, he is the kind of person everyone would like to sign up to their films and he is a great guy as well."
