THE English Defence League are understood to have cancelled a demonstration in Bradford on Saturday, but one in Keighley will still going ahead.

The far right group had initially said they would congregate in Keighley at 1pm before moving on to Bradford at 3pm.

But the most recent release from the group makes no mention of Bradford, and police have now said the EDL is no longer planning to come to the city.

The initial announcement had led to counter protests being planned in both locations.

A police spokesman said: “Police are continuing to work with partners and liaise with organisers with a view to facilitating a demonstration and counter protest in Keighley.

“It is our understanding that the EDL are not planning to hold a similar event in Bradford city centre and as such, there are no plans to facilitate similar events in Bradford."

A joint statement released by Bradford Council chief executive Kersten England and police chief superintendent Scott Bisset said: "We understand that some people may have an expectation that the police or council should ban these demonstrations. We don't have any legal power to do this.

"We therefore have to plan for the protests in order to ensure public safety.

"Local people can have confidence in the police maintaining public safety."
