TWO luxury high performance cars, together valued at more than £600,000, have been seized by police during a crackdown on irresponsible driving.

The Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari Spider, were taken from their drivers after they were pulled over by officers.

They were then both taken away on low loader trucks.

The orange Lamborghini was seized in Barrowford Road, Nelson, after allegations it had been speeding in Hallam Road at around 4.20pm.

The red Ferrari Spider was also seized as part of the operation because the driver's licence had expired, police said.

The seizures prompted community leaders to warn 'irresponsible' motorists who have been using major routes through Nelson and Colne to slow down before they kill someone.

It comes as police carried out a clampdown on vehicles 'racing' in the area.

Cllr Tommy Cooney, who represents Nelson's Marsden ward, said: "I'm aware of issues of speeding and racing in my ward.

"It's a major concern for me that a main route is being used as a race track.

"These people have no regards for the safety of pedestrians or other drivers.

"I have had many reports from residents about speeding, particularly late at night.

"I have talked to the police about trying to do something about it.

"I know Lancashire County Council is also doing a speed survey in Townhouse Road."

Cllr Sheila Wicks, who represents Southfield ward, said the risk taking drivers needed to 'grow up' before they caused serious harm.

She said: "We do have problems with people racing along the main streets.

"We do report it to the police but they can't be everywhere at once.

"I think it's young men showing off but they are putting lives at risk, especially children and the elderly.

"They need to grow up before they kill somebody."

In 2009 a mum-of-three was killed in a hit and run when a car struck her at twice the speed limit in Leeds Road.

The driver was later jailed for three years for causing death by dangerous driving.

PC Nigel Keates said: "As part of a request for the Road Traffic team to clamp down on vehicles racing along the border between Colne and Nelson traffic officers were in the area and seized these two vehicles.

"One driver had his vehicles seized for driving anti socially, the other driver with no licence and by virtue no insurance.

"I guess that's one prancing horse back in the stable and one raging bull back in the barn.

"If only we could implant the feelings of all concerned from a life changing accident into the head of a reckless driver even if it was for one day or one hour.

"Unfortunately there are some that think it will never happen to them and we can't convince them otherwise."

Officers said both vehicles were seized on April 1 and urged anyone who spots a speeding motorist to contact them on 101.
