The windows at a new restaurant have been smashed for a second time in what has been labelled ‘mindless vandalism’.

The Mother Hubbard Family Fish and Chip Restaurant has only been open for five weeks in Preston New Road, Blackburn.

Windows were replaced at the eatery last month, but on Wednesday morning staff arrived to discover more extensive damage to the front of the premises.

The new 2,200 sq ft restaurant seats around 80 people.

Councillor Suleman Khonat, who represents the Shear Brow ward, said: "It is not going to do anybody any good.

"This is really bad and mindless vandalism on a newly opened restaurant.

"It has been good for the area and the restaurant is based on a popular route into the town.

"I really feel that other high profile businesses may look at twice at opening if things like this happen."

Mother Hubbard’s opened after renovations to the interior of the building, which was once Mr Fu's Chinese restaurant.

The fish and chip chain was established in Scarborough in 1972. The Blackburn branch employs 20 staff.

A police spokesman said: "Between 1.30am and 1.40am on November 11, unknown offenders have approached the restaurant and smashed four windows, causing damage totalling £1,000.

"I would urge anyone with information to contact police on 101, quoting log number 0076 of November 11. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111."

No-one from Euro Garages, who run the franchise, was available for comment.
