Sony has revealed its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia XZ, claiming it contains "one of the most advanced cameras ever".

The phone was among an array of new products previewed by the technology firm, which also includes new wireless noise-cancelling headphones and a gold-plated Walkman music player.

At the Japanese firm's event ahead of the IFA technology show in Berlin, Sony president Kazuo Hirai said the manufacturing giant was aiming to do more to please customers.

"We want our products to be at the 'last one inch' at the closest point to you, he said.

"Our relevance to you lies in continuing to offer emotional value through a wide range of products which are intimately involved in enhancing what you see, hear, experience and enjoy."

The new XZ smartphone will be the first to come with three image sensors as well as five axis image stabilisation, features not seen elsewhere and likely to make the smartphone rival most others in terms of taking photos.

As part of the firm's Life Space UX line of products, Mr Hirai confirmed that the firm's Glass Sound Speaker, a lantern-like device that emits sound through vibrating glass is now on sale in the UK, as is the firm's portable speaker.

A new pair of gesture-controlled noise cancelling headphones, the MDR-1000X were also unveiled. As well as blocking out background noise, when users cup their hand over the right earpiece, ambient sound is let in so users can have and hear short conversations without removing their headphones.

IFA opens to the public on Friday, where the more than 200,000 visitors will be able to sample the new products being showcased by the more than 1,500 companies at the event.
