Weather warnings have been renewed across Bradford and district with the Arctic freeze set to continue into the weekend.

Bradford Council’s gritters were out in force covering all primary routes from 7pm last night after heavy sleet and sub-zero conditions were predicted.

Further light snow showers were expected today with temperatures forecast to fall as low as minus six degrees between tonight and tomorrow morning.

Motorists have been warned to expect hazardous driving conditions for the next few days as snow and sleet turn to ice.

Weather conditions are expected to improve on Sunday, but drivers have been warned there could still be a risk of ice until the road surfaces begin to warm up.

The Highways Agency is advising drivers to check the weather forecast and road conditions before travelling after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice throughout Yorkshire.

Jason Glasson, of the Highways Agency’s severe weather team, said: “We are expecting a range of severe weather conditions, including the risk of freezing rain, snowfall and ice. Not every journey is essential in severe weather, but if you really must travel in the worst conditions, check your vehicle before you set out, take a severe weather emergency kit, check traffic and weather conditions and always plan your journey.”

Tony Reeves, chief executive of Bradford Council, assured residents the authority had substantial stocks of grit and well developed plans to deal with the snow and ice.

He said: “We will always strive to keep the major commuter network open, but people must be aware that very heavy snowfall can easily create circumstances that result in widespread disruption. We advise people to stock up on rock salt for their driveways and keep an eye out for their neighbours, particularly if they are elderly or vulnerable.”
