Minhaj-ul-Quran International (MQI) UK will host a seminar today to promote awareness on how Islam encourages democratic participation and to encourage British Muslims to vote in the forthcoming general election and to clarify the extremist stance against voting.

The seminar which will attract hundreds of British Muslims from across the UK will focus on highlighting the reasons why Muslims must take part in elections and also what the religious viewpoint is. MQI encourages voting for any large party which would best serve the interest of the local constituency and the country as a whole.

Representatives and parliamentary candidates from all three major political parties are invited to attend and Stephen Timms MP from Labour has confirmed his attendance.

Spokesman of MQI Shahid Mursaleen said, “As there is only a week left to the general elections we believe that its crucial to encourage Muslim to vote. It is vital for the well being of British Muslims and also the wider community that we encourage British Muslims to fully participate in the forthcoming general election. Politics and taking part in the political process is a part of Islam and Islamic teachings.”

“We are organising this event to totally rebut the calls of some extremists who preach the contrary. Islam promotes democracy and justice. The third caliph of the Muslims was democratically elected and elections took place 1400 years ago, which proves that voting and elections are completely Islamic.”

He Added, “We encourage Muslims in Barking to fully participate in the elections and support one of the main political parties to stop the far right groups like the BNP to gain control.”
