A conference on dealing with racism in schools is being organised by Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council.

The conference will help pupils challenge racism and empower young people and professionals to deal with racist incidents.

Working together during the day, delegates will learn how to address and deal with racism by making sure young people know their rights and that policies and procedures are in place and working.

Young people, teachers, governors, volunteers and professionals working in Children and Young Peoples Services can attend the day-long event at the University of Leicester, on Thursday, March 6.

Richard Wale, Head of the City Council's Multicultural Service, said: "Research that has focused on young people shows schools do not pick up on every incident that actually happens.

"It's important for young people that we know about all incidents and what further action we can take to prevent them, to ensure that everyone gets the most out of their education."

County Councillor Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for Children and Young People's Services, said: "We are committed to eliminating racism and this conference will give people the power to deal with racist incidents and challenge racism. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who works with young people to learn more about preventing racism."

Dealing with Racist Incidents: Preventing Racism and Empowering Young People will take place from 9am to 4pm.
