Things have gotten pretty desperate when people think that the name of a president might actually be offensive in some way. Have we got to a point in human history where saying Donald Trump is new way of trying to offend someone?

I was in a car park the other day with the children and I hear a voice shouting ‘Donald Trump’. I turned around to see three teenagers (can’t tell the ages) sat in a back of a car.

They seemed to be waiting for their parents.

Now, one Donald Trump is enough but a few Donald Trump jibes at my direction was a little too much.

I asked them what they meant by Donald Trump? I’m not Donald Trump. Do you know a Donald Trump? What has Donald Trump got to do with anything?

There was an embarrassing silence. Some red faces. They obviously knew what they were implying but were afraid to state anything further.

Now, two things actually come to mind. First of all when you have your kids with you, you have to answer the questions. ‘Dad, why were they saying Donald Trump?’ What does that mean?

It is a tough one. It might mean they mistook me for Donald Trump several times as they did not know what he looks like. Or that Donald Trump was some joke term these days and I was missing the point.

It might mean they are suggesting that Trump 'has a thing about Muslims' and by stating his name it might annoy the other person.

Or, it could mean that we are living on a planet where people have forgotten how to be offensive. Hey, if you are going to be offensive you might as well go the whole hog. Why beat around the bush and insinuate things?

Secondly, there are huge problems when something like this happens and there are kids and then I guess women involved. The point being you can’t really respond.

You can come out with some witty comment and pretend to be annoyed but on the whole you can’t do diddly squat. Which is a good thing.

Sometimes, though, you wish it wasn’t a kid who did it and their parents were there.

Then you could do what you wanted.

But I guess kids, bless them, will be as stupid as their parents and doing nothing is probably the best thing.
