Country Life has revealed its guide on how to be a lady. The comprehensive rules include splitting the bill, never over-plucking her eyebrows, never ever getting botox and knowing when to let a man take charge (or let him think so).

The insightful list continues to state a good woman should know never to boast on Facebook, should be able to cook the perfect roast potato and should never wear make-up on the school run.

Country Life produced this list following their much publicised ‘How to be a Gentleman’ guide.

Country Life said: "We’ve heard all about the criteria that make a gentleman and our list – part serious, part tongue-in-cheek – seemed to strike such a chord in a society that desperately needs to be kinder to itself that we felt it was only fair to present the female view, too.

"The central principle is the same – generosity and graciousness are more important than fine feathers and a lady can come from any walk of life – but there’s one key difference: a capable lady knows when to let her gentleman take charge (or let him think so)."

Some of the more practical guidelines include not wearing heels she can’t walk in and teaching her son to iron his shirts and her daughter to change a fuse.

Whilst the varied list has induced a distinct cleavage in opinion, professional matchmaker Ruby Akbar, 65, said: “Although this list is compiled by Country Life, there are many things in this list that I would expect the younger generation to know from their general upbringing.

“I know times have changed from setting up Asian weddings. Now, rather than families coming to find a suitable match for the sons or daughters, the potential brides and grooms come to me for help.

“Before I introduce one match to the other, I always ask them a series of questions to make sure their manners are of a certain standard.

“So whilst some people may criticise the Country Life list as being outdated or sexist, actually it is very relevant.

“I’m not sure about the relevance of cooking the perfect roast potato, but cooking the perfect roti – now that’s an art in itself! That should be added to the list!”
