More than 30 teams from as far afield as Leicester and Pontefract took part in a charity football tournament in Blackburn at the weekend.

The eight-a-side Aid4Ummah tournament held at Witton Park's 3G Pitches on Sunday proved to be a great hit, with teams who were made up of established clubs as well as those consisting of friends and families.

A total of £7,272 was raised from the event.

Clubs began competing in the cup at 9.30am with eight groups featuring four teams. The top teams went through to the Champions League knockout stages and the bottom two into another knockout stage, entitled the Europa League.

The Reds from Liverpool ran out winners in the Champions League Cup, beating the free-scoring Beyer Neverlosen in the final on penalties.

The talented Merseyside side had earlier beaten the much-fancied Club 58 at the semi-final stage on route to the championship.

The Europa League final was also settled by a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw between Aftab Projects and Kingsley.

Aftab Projects were 1-0 ahead in the final before a freak goal gifted the opposition an equaliser.

The team won three penalty shoot outs throughout the tournament without missing a single spot kick.

The competition was held to raise funds for the Aid4Ummah charity, and presenting the awards on the day was Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Cllr Suleman Khonat.

He was joined by founder of the charity, Salim Mulla.

An army of volunteers were on hand to assist with the organisation on the day.

A message from Salim Mulla founder / Trustee and Ahmed Yusuf  Operations Manager read: "Aid 4 Ummah would like to thank all the players and teams who participated in the tournament - it was wonderful to see teams coming from Pontecraft, Leicester, Birmingham, Dewsbury, Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton and of course Blackburn.

"We would also like to thank the sponsors and volunteers who made this all possible.

"It was our first tournament and we feel it went well and the feedback we have received has been brilliant.

"Teams have already asked if we are holding the tournament next year - we hope to do so! Most importantly we have raised an amazing amount of money for those most in need in Sierra Leone - who will benefit massively."
