IT has been hugely delayed by the pandemic but Hani'z in Warrington has opened for sit-down customers for the first time.
Zahid Iqbal revealed his plans to transform the former Peacocks store back in February 2020.
Zahid Iqbal revealed his plans to transform the former Peacocks store back in February 2020.
It was originally going to open as a world buffet restaurant in May of that year but the subsequent lockdowns saw work on the 7,500sq ft unit go on hold.
Incredibly, it has been more than a year since the planned launch and even now Zahid can only welcome diners in with restrictions.
Due to that, Hani'z will be table service only and have a stripped down menu until Covid rules on hospitality lift – it will then become a self-service unlimited eatery as planned.
Zahid said: "I’m disappointed we can't launch as a buffet restaurant but at least we can welcome people in and give them a sense of what Hani'z is like.
"It’s just getting more and more difficult as a business owner. Every single day I’m not open it is costing me money so it has been extremely tough.
"That’s why I’ve made the decision to open up with a table service. Depending on anything changing with the restrictions, we’re hoping to relaunch as a buffet on July 19 where you’re able to get up and help yourself."
The current menu features Pakistani and Chinese dishes as well as a burger menu for kids and a range of desserts.
Zahid said: "People can come in, take a seat and pick what they want. A waiter will bring their food to them but they can order as many times as they want. It’ll be like a banqueting menu where you’ll sit down and you’ll get the food brought to you."
There will be space for about 180 people in booth seating.
Zahid added: "I’ve done that to create a relaxed dining experience as often when you go to a lot of buffet restaurants they tend to have tables and chairs cramped together."
The 44-year-old, who runs a management consultancy company, was attracted to Warrington for his first solo venture due to the £142.5million Time Square development that is currently transforming the town centre.
"The Grand has also just launched and there are other businesses looking to open up so things are changing and improving in the town centre," he said.
Around 25 jobs will have been created by the time the restaurant is open at full capacity without restrictions.
By then, Hani'z will offer more than 80 dishes from around the world.
Zahid's aim is essentially to offer families a special meal out without breaking the bank.
