MP Sajid Javid has called for a memorial to honour Muslims who served with Britain and its allies during the two World Wars.
The World Wars Muslim Memorial Trust, registered in 2016, seeks to honour those Muslim soldiers from the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and North Africa who were involved in the two global conflicts.
Speaking at Treasury questions, former cabinet minister Sir Sajid said: “The chancellor will be aware of a proposal from the World Wars Muslim Memorial Trust to establish a memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum honouring an estimated 750,000 Muslims that have fought for British armed forces, with tens of thousands of them paying the ultimate sacrifice.
“Previous budgets have supported memorials that honour those who have given us the freedoms we enjoy.
“So may I ask the chancellor to consider this proposal and help make it a reality?”
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said his officials would engage with Sir Sajid to identify how the government can help “make this vision a reality”.
