Chancellor Sajid Javid spoke to his mum in Punjabi at the Conservative party conference.

His mother was sat in the audience for her first conference. Javid spoke of how proud his mother had been when the first Asians moved into Coronation Street in Manchester 20 years ago. He then said now his family were the first Asians to move into Downing Street and still “living above the shop.”

Addressing his mother in Punjabi, Mr Javid said, "Mummy did you ever think we’d be here today?"  He then asked her if she remembers his dad’s first shop which was about a mile away from where he’s standing.

Speaking to the audience he said, “Sorry, that’s between us. I forgot you were there – just trying to make her feel comfortable.”
