Today Google has marked Persian mathematician Omar Khayyam's 971st birth anniversary with a doodle.
Omar Khayyam born on May 18, 1048 in Nishapur in north-east Iran.
Also poet, philosopher and astronomer he is known for his work on cubic equations as well as his contribution to the parallel axiom.
Khayyam also contributed to the understanding of the parallel axiom.
As an astronomer, he designed the Jalali calendar, a solar calendar with a very precise 33-year intercalation cycle.
