This year Ramadan in the UK consists approximately of an 18 hour fast.

In the summer heat, it is important to stay hydrated during the long fast.

Here are a few tips to help you stay hydrated this Ramadan:

1.Try to drink at least eight glasses of water every day. Avoid juices when you are opening your fast. Water is the best fluid to stay hydrated. Avoid drinking large quantities of water all at once or a lot during one meal. Drink water regularly between maghrib and fajr.

2.If you are going to Taraweeh prayers in the mosque, bring a bottle of water with you to sip at during regular intervals.

3.Keep a bottle of water by your bedside.

4.As tempting as it is to eat fried food like pakoras and samosas at iftari time, try and avoid these as they increase thirst, as do hot and spicy dishes. Salty food also increases thirst, so try and replace them with a healthier alternative.

5.Fresh fruit and vegetables are great things to eat when you open your fast as they are rich in water and fibre. They will help you stay hydrated with the additional fluids in your system.
