One cannot fail to feel an immense sense of wonderment and utmost delight upon seeing one of the worlds finest horticultural displays at the Gardens by the Bay, Singapore.

My recent sojourn gave me a glimpse into a wide, total array of plants from around the world housed in two giant greenhouses by the marina.

The ‘Flower Dome’ ‘Cloud Forest’ and the ‘Supertrees’ outside impress this undoubtedly as a 22nd century garden far ahead of its times.

The latter stand testament standing tall, to Singapore’s vision to become the leading nation in the major fields of our times.

The diverse range of flora from the four corners of the world enable any visitor with an interest to explore this enchanted wonderland leaving with a sense of fascination and deeper awareness of the world around us aesthetically and spiritually.

The exotic species in the cooled greenhouses enable all plants to flourish and show off at their best their finer intricacies in all manner.

On show are rare fruit trees such as Breadfruit ((Artocarpus), Jambu (syzygium aqeum) and the Belimbing (Averrhoa billimb) and more.

Dry region cacti as well as the traditional familiar western species of Narcissus, Pussy Willow, dazzling Dahlias, Chrysanthemums, Orchids, citrus fruits and many more can be found. There are 1,000 year old olive trees, unusual Baababs from the mediteranean and sub tropical regions as key features.

With the onset of the Chinese New year the year of the sheep are typified florally amongst bedazzling colours.

In contrast the Cloud Forest greenhouse is primarily green with a man made 35ft waterfall at the entrance and a spiral staircase rising high inside the vertical plant periphery wall. This inner mountain has various tropical montane region species on show as passing visitors are showered by the mist and spray from the waterfall, emanating all round. An experience which goes far beyond any gardens I have visited anywhere else.

Outside, the Supertrees stand testament to man and nature working hand in hand as the metal structures allow vertical plants, rising to over 100ft, creating as the name suggests 'Supertrees'.

At the top, they are connected with an arc swinging suspension bridge where one can witness amazing views beneath and beyond the Marina at this humid, tropical Asiatic location.

The Gardens by the Bay are a unique creation bringing nature to show at its best in harmony, against a backdrop of tall skyscrapers equally built eco-friendly.

There are many more areas, just impossible to see in one day. The Heritage Gardens, Dragonfly Lake, Sun Pavilion, Children’s Garden supported by finest restaurants from around the world are at hand making this a once in a lifetime place to visit.

Singaporeans continue to enjoy the most advanced state and what it offers in its current renaissance period The Gardens by the bay are literally home to most of the world’s finest plant life. I cannot recommend it enough for both professional horticulturalists to amateurs and to just lovers of nature and life itself.
