OLDHAM Athletic have completed a major piece of January transfer business in confirming Jonny Smith will be staying on loan at Boundary Park until the end of the season.

The Bristol City winger has scored seven goals in 23 appearances for Latics, becoming an increasingly key figure.

The 22-year-old arrived on a season-long loan at the end of the summer window but the deal had a break clause in it.

Latics have however got their man for the remainder of the campaign on what they describe as an “improved deal” amid fears he could head elsewhere.

"The club have worked very hard to get this done after interest from others due to the fine form he has been in,” said head coach Dino Maamria.
"He's a big part of this team this season and he's really enjoying his time here, so it was only right we tried to keep a hold of him, which I am sure the fans will be happy about.”

The news completes a fruitful few days in the transfer market for Latics who also signed prolific AFC Fylde frontman Danny Rowe to bolster their attaching options.

Maamria has also added Christian N’Guessan, Zak Dearnley, Emmanuel Dieseruvwe and Carl Piergianni to his squad this month.
