Amir Khan’s fight in Saudi Arabia has been confirmed.

The Bolton star will take on India’s Neeraj Goyat at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah on July 12.

News of the bout broke earlier this week with Khan reportedly set to net around £7 million against the unheralded Goyat.

It is not clear whether the bout will be an exhibition or an official contest, but details released by the promoters say ‘a championship title’ will be on the line.

Khan is a major attraction in the Gulf State and will become the first high-profile Muslim boxer to fight there.

“This is an exciting challenge that I have ahead of me,” he said.

“It will be the first time a British Pakistani will fight an Indian boxer, which eventually will bring the two nations together.

“I would like to thank the Saudi government and General Sports Authority for giving me this opportunity and I’m a firm believer in sport being a great healer.”

The 32-year-old’s career is at a crossroads after his bizarre defeat to WBO World welterweight champion Terence Crawford in New York in April.

Many called for Khan to end a 14-year career that once saw him rule as a unified world super-lightweight champion and face some of the sport’s biggest names, including Marcos Maidana, Zab Judah, Danny Garcia and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

The Olympic silver medallist insists he will fight on however with his fight in Jeddah likely set him up for a more significant outing later in the year, a long-awaited domestic clash with Kell Brook on the agenda.

As for Goyat there is no information so far on the number of rounds or what weight the fight will take place at.

The WBC Asian champion, the 27-year-old has won 11 of his 16 fights, losing three and drawing two, and has fought nowhere near the level of Khan.

He has competed around the globe however - stepping through the ropes in China, Thailand, South Korea, Mexico and Canada.

“This opportunity is as big as it gets for me,” Goyat said.

“Everything that I have achieved to date wouldn’t matter when I enter the ring on July 12 taking on a seasoned, established superstar in Amir Khan.

“I will be carrying the hopes of 1.2bn on my shoulders who will expect me to bring the title by causing an upset.”

Saudi Arabia has been making moves to hold major sporting events in recent months, the World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight final that saw Bolton-trained Callum Smith defeat George Groves taking place in Jeddah in September.

Khan and Goyat are embarking on a media tour to promote the event starting Delhi, India on Friday before heading to Karachi, Pakistan on Saturday with the UK stop coming in London next Thursday, June 6.

They will then head to Jeddah on June 24.
