Scott Quigg and Anthony Crolla were the star names in attendance as Bury’s Village Hotel hosted a big night of boxing on Saturday.

The town’s favourite son Quigg was the guest of honour and took part in a question and answer session as part of the card put on by Kieran Farrell.

The former WBA World super bantamweight champion is currently recovering from having surgery on a tendon injury in his left arm which forced him to pull out of a scheduled fight with Jayson Velez in Los Angeles on April 26.

It was a significant night for Manchester’s Crolla who had his first fight as a trainer, working the corner as his Moston charge Dylan Evans proved too good for Michael Horabin.

Bury Times:

The 32-year-old was last seen in action being stopped by pound-for-pound star Vasiliy Lomachenko as he failed in a daring bid to become a world lightweight champion for a second time on April 12.

His appearance as a trainer could be a sign of things to come, as Crolla is thought to be considering hanging up the gloves after the defeat to the Ukrainian.

Elsewhere on the card the Bury interest came from Farrell-trained prospect Ben Ridings who continued his education.

The 21-year-old middleweight made it three wins out of three with a shutout points victory over durable late replacement Kevin McCauley.

Bury Times:

Ridings, a former Tottington High School pupil previously attached to Bury ABC, was a 40-36 victor over four rounds as he added to wins against Lewis van Poetsch and Zygimantas Butkevicius.

Manchester’s Dan Booth made an impressive start to his professional career by dispatching Karim Khan in the first round of their middleweight contest.

Heywood’s Lee Clayton was another winner on the night, sending Kieran Holman to the canvas in the third round with the Sheffield man surviving to see out the four rounds.

Altrincham’s George Brennan, who had another Manchester fight favourite in John Murray in his corner, rounded off the night with a points win against Luke Fash.
The fights are available to watch back on the Kieran Farrell Promotions YouTube page.

Farrell was a promising professional himself before his career was ended when he suffered a life threatening brain injury in a fight with Crolla back in 2012.

He was forced to retire at the age of just 22 but is now a trainer, manager and promoter based out of the People’s Gym in Heywood.
