HEROES and villains have been carved into ice as a now-annual festival celebrating the art form gets underway.

Wonder Woman, Darth Vader and North-East television personalities Ant and Dec are among the sculptures to be featured at Fire&Ice InDurham, which starts today.

The trail, which covers Durham city centre, is open between 10am and 6pm and features a total of 10 sculptures.

The Northern Echo:

They have been created by a team of ice sculptors, led by Mat Chaloner, from Glacial Arts, which has previously worked on hit TV show Game of Thrones.

The sculpture trail will also feature characters like Lego Batman, Maleficent and a Thunderbird as well as North-East heroine Grace Darling.

TV duo Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly feature after topping a public vote, which asked people to choose between their favourite North-East personalities.

The event also features a number of free activities, including live ice-carving demonstrations by the experts at Glacial Art, the opportunity to have a go at it yourself, street performances and a grand finale event, which will see jets of water and shooting flames “dance” in time to music.

The event continues on Saturday.
