Labour's Tan Dhesi increased the Labour majority in the area from more than 7,000 in 2015 to almost 17,000 over the Tories. He becomes the UK's first turban-wearing Sikh MP.

In his acceptance speech he said: "May I say first of all it is a historic moment for Slough and I am truly humbled and honoured to be elected as your member of Parliament."

He said to come back to the town where he was born and win was special. He said: "To be elected to serve for this town is an honour beyond belief...

"Many of you will remember that the first black mayor in the country was elected right here in Slough and after many other significant achievements, decades after, Slough has elected the first turbaned Sikh MP into the British Parliament.

"I know that British Sikhs will have hopes and aspirations for me. I can feel the weight of those responsibilities on me because, as we have been saying, to represent you as a member of parliament is a significant undertaking.

"At this time I want to assure you that I am the Labour Party MP and the Slough MP to serve everybody regardless of race, colour and creed."

Mr Dhesi paid tribute to this father in his speech.

Later speaking to the Observer, his father Jaspal Singh Dhesi, 65, who worked at the Langley Ford plant in the 1970s, said: "I'm feeling very proud and happy.

"We knew he would be an MP one day but never thought it would happen this quick."

When asked how he would celebrate with his son, he said: "I'm actually vegetarian and I don't drink alcohol.

"If he (Tan) wants to do something later he can. I'll chill out and it is up to him."

As reported in the Observer, the Tories openly targeted Slough after Labour's Fiona Mactaggartt stepped down. Theresa May and Boris Johnson even visited earlier this week in a last-ditch attempt to get votes.

But, like many seats tonight, it didn't go the way the Tories wanted.
