A "derelict and decaying" former office block which is visible from nearly every point in Swindon town centre is undergoing a £8 million transformation.

Falcon House, which sits on top of the former Debenhams store, has been empty for more than a decade.

It will now be revamped into 65 luxury apartments over the next 18 months by London-based property company Avivco Developments, Swindon Borough Council has confirmed.

The Swindon landmark has been previously described as an eyesore because vandals and graffiti artists have targeted it over the years.

"A former office block in Swindon’s town centre is undergoing a Phoenix-like renaissance thanks to ongoing work to rejuvenate the local area", a council spokesman said.

The six-storey concrete block will be replaced with a modern, glass exterior.

The council has released an image of an artist's impression of the renovated building.

Falcon House, which overlooks Fleming Way, attracted investors because of its prime location in the town centre and the car parking provision under the building.

Avivco has recently undertaken similar projects at Kingsbridge Point at Regent Circus and in Commercial Road.

There are also plans for Debenhams which sits below Falcon House.

Debenhams closed its doors in the spring of 2020 but plans have been drawn up to give the building a new use as a state-of-the-art storage hub
