A school in Bury has been praised after its latest inspection.

St Joseph and St Bede RC Primary School on Danesmoor Drive has been rated "good" following a visit by education watchdog Ofsted.

A report by the regulator stated that pupils are eager and happy to learn, and they feel valued and safe due to the "nurturing ethos of the school".

It also stated that parents and carers also appreciate the work of staff and leaders regarding the pupil’s personal development and pupils including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) develop into confident, independent learners and achieve well.

The school's personal development was ranked as "outstanding" while its early years provision, leadership and management, behaviour and attitudes and quality of education were all deemed "good".

The report stated: “Leaders have a clear vision for the school. The curriculum outlines what pupils are expected to learn step by step in each subject.

“Pupils gain secure knowledge and understanding in most subjects. In addition, they apply what they have learned in different contexts.

“Leaders and staff are alert to identify any pupils who may have SEND.

“Teachers routinely check that pupils with SEND have understood what they are being taught.

“This results in pupils receiving suitable extra support when they need it.”

In the report the work to promote pupils’ personal development was described as “praiseworthy” and pupils are polite, well mannered, behave well and treat each other with consideration.

Staff are trained well to identify any safeguarding issues and respond to concerns quickly and deal with any concerns effectively, according to the report.

Despite the positive review, there are some improvements that could be made.

The report added: “In a few subjects, including in early years, the curriculum has been developed quite recently.

“Pupils do not know and remember as much of their previous learning in these subjects as they do in others.

“Leaders should embed the curriculum in these subjects to help ensure that pupils know and remember more.”

The report added: “Leaders’ approach to the delivery of the new phonics curriculum is not followed consistently by all staff.

“This means that a minority of pupils do not learn phonics as quickly as they should. Leaders should ensure that all staff deliver the new phonics curriculum as intended.”

In response to the report, head teacher Jane Myerscough said: “The staff and governors of St Joseph and St Bede are more than proud of our recent Ofsted grading, which reflects the progress our loving school has made over recent years.

“We are especially delighted with our 'outstanding' grading for personal development, which truly emulates the core ethos of our school, which is to inspire all pupils to Dream-Believe-Achieve.

“We are proud of our journey, even through the past two years, which have been turbulent for all.

“With excitement, we are enthusiastic for the next stage of our SJSB journey, where we will continue to aim high and strive for greatness for our pupils and families.

“We would like to thank our wider school community for their ongoing support.”
