DARLINGTON'S Indian community has been celebrating Navratri.

The celebration is a festival of “nine nights” where each night an reincarnation of the goddess Maa Durga is worshipped.

Explaining further, Hrishikesh Bedekar, who was one of the organisers, said: "We remind ourselves of the powerful feminine forms of the Gods and how Maa Durga defeated the demon Mahisashura after a battle of nine nights.

"It is always important to remember the importance of all those in our society and especially the mothers and carers who do so much for us, just as our Goddess does."

More than 80 members of Darlington's Hindu community attended the event at Hummersknott Academy.

Families came together to eat food cooked by members of the community and take part in the lively folk dance Garba and Dandiya.
