A SELF-defence trainer has spoken of the ‘incredible’ moment she completed an obstacle course after scaling Mount Kilimanjaro.

Zaynab Jogi, known as Zee, runs a fitness and self-defence academy and took on the gruelling challenge in attempt to set a new world record.

She spent two weeks in Tanzania alongside a group of 43 athletes from 26 countries who climbed 5,895 meters and then completed the challenge at the top of the mountain - a new record.

She said: “Incredible things can be achieved with hard work, determination, and positive attitude.

“This was the most challenging thing I have ever done. This particular attempt has never been done before and I was glad to part of a unique experience.

“I achieved two world records and was proud to be part of a fantastic team. I received a lot of love and support from Rob Freeman, David Pickle and am glad to have met wonderful athletes.”

The ‘Machame Route’ took seven days to complete.

She said: “My journey was incredible. I trained three months prior to the event which really supported my journey and fully acclimatised for the hike. I hiked for five days without any trouble however I really struggled climbing to the summit.

“We started the hike at midnight and after three hours of hiking the pain in my left knee was unbearable. This slowed my pace down and I asked for help from one of the porters. Martyn was very helpful as he carried my bag pack and supported me thereafter.”

The trek wasn’t without further problems when Zee suffered altitude sickness.

She said: “After a couple of hours at the elevation of 17,400ft I vomited twice and did not have any motivation to continue. I will not forget Martyn’s words: “Hukuna Matata, poley poley – no worries, hike slowly slowly.

“The elevation was getting unbearable, and my lungs were tightening. I struggled to breath however I found strength from within and I summited successfully. It was a fantastic experience to complete the balancing beam, monkey bars and many other obstacles.”

Zee was raising funds to help support local women and assist them in learning self-defence.

She added “Thank you for the sponsors I Conquer, Street Safe Self Defence and Bangor Street Community Centre.”
