A NEIGHBOUR has recalled watching in horror as a woman was left "on fire" in the street in Bury.

Detectives have launched a murder inquiry after the 31-year-old suffered severe burns as a result of the incident in East Street last night and later died in hospital.

Floral tributes have been left at the scene and three men have been held over the alleged killing.

One neighbour, Shaista Farzeen, 33, was among those who gathered to pay her respects.

Ms Farzeen, from Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, said she was visiting family for Eid when they heard screams outside in the street.

She said: "I have never seen anything like it. This woman was on fire.

"We all came running out and she was there sat there on the pavement.

"She was gasping for breath. Her hair was singed. There was no part of her body that wasn't burnt.

"People used pillows and cushions to try and douse the fire and we wrapped a wet duvet around her until the ambulance came.

"I was in shock."

Neighbours said the victim had not lived in the area for long and they believed she had recently been married.

Police officers were conducting house-to-house inquiries in East Street tonight as their investigation continues.

Three men aged 34, 24 and 26 have been arrested in connection with the incident, and remain in custody for questioning, say police.

Detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with their inquiries.

Det Chief Insp Daniel Clegg said: "This is a truly devastating incident, in which a woman has tragically lost her life.

"I would like to reassure the public that we believe this is an isolated incident, and there will be an increased emergency services presence in the area as we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding this death.

"If you have any questions, feel free to talk to one of our officers who would be happy to share information.

"Although we have made arrests, our investigation is still in its early stages, and we're following a number of lines of inquiry.
