A WOMAN and a teenage girl were arrested after a violent brawl in a street.

Police were called to Providence Place in Brighton on Tuesday afternoon after reports of a street fight.

One passer-by reported seeing a woman "with her face covered in blood" and several police cars at the scene and in nearby Ann Street.

The force has now confirmed a 37-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl were arrested and the woman was taken to hospital with facial injuries.

The teenage girl was arrested on suspicion of assault and beating an emergency worker, while the woman was arrested on suspicion of affray.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw what happened to come forward.

A spokesman said: "At about 4.20pm on Tuesday, police were called to reports of a fight in Providence Place, Brighton.

"A 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of affray. She suffered a facial injury during the altercation and was taken to hospital for treatment.

"A 16-year-old girl was also arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, using threatening, abusive, insulting words and/or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm and/or distress, and assault by beating of an emergency worker.

"Both have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

"Anyone who saw what happened or who has any other information is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting serial 1019 of 29/06."
