Here is the first look inside the new German Doner Kebab (GDK) Restaurant ahead of its opening.

Work on the £500,000 restaurant in Blackburn began last September and this month staff were on site taking part in training. The venture has created 50 new roles.

The 101-seater restaurant is due to open soon but when it does it will only be serving take outs (no deliveries) until May 17.

There are no plans for outdoor seating.

The new restaurant is the brand’s 56th site in the UK.

The GDK restaurant takes up most of the ground floor area of the building and includes a prayer room. Another restaurant based next door to the GDK is also being planned but details for this are yet to be revealed.

In 2019 it was announced the Eanam site would be home to the new GDK restaurant which would take up half the ground floor.

A glass frontage was installed on the building earlier this year which will also eventually include a spiral staircase leading up to a wedding hall and events venue on the second floor. This will be run separately from the GDK restaurant.

Completion date for this believed to be within the next two months ahead of planned lifting of restrictions for larger events, special occasions and weddings.

The building was formerly the Maida Restaurant.

GDK opened its first restaurant in Berlin in 1989 and this year announced plans to almost double its network of stores to nearly 100 sites, with the expansion plans set to create 1,800 jobs. The brand will also expand into Manchester, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Stockport, Stirling, and additional sites in London and Glasgow by the end of 2021.

Daniel Bunce, GDK MD for UK and Europe, said: “We’re delighted to officially announce plans to bring the German Doner Kebab experience to Blackburn.”
