FAMILIES in Blackburn with Darwen can benefit from free computers thanks to a youth organisation.

Youth Action said the aim was to provide children access to technology so they have an opportunity ‘to learn and catch up on work while at home’.

Chief Executive of Youth Action, Amar Abbas, said: “Without access to technology and the internet, disadvantaged pupils risk falling even further behind their peers. But with the support of Youth Action and partners, we can ensure that no child is isolated from online learning – so that all pupils have the opportunity to achieve their best potential.”

The pilot project began during lockdown and was supported by The Bloomfield Trust and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, who provided personal computers to Youth Action families.

Members of their Digital Engagement team provided technical support to ensure families could assemble the equipment.

The Raspberry Pi is a small single-board computer built into a keyboard.

Amar said: “We are huge advocates of collaborative working and making things possible – that’s how we delivered over 300 online learning kits to families we support.

“As our work becomes ever-more relevant for the people we support, we know the impact of school closures on children is only just beginning to show.

"But Youth Action will be here, supporting children and families every step of the way."

Youth Action are considering requests from children aged 6 to 11, those who do not have any digital devices at home, and those on low income or free school meals and living in Blackburn or Darwen.

Each household must have their own internet connection.

Amar said: “We have been working tirelessly throughout this pandemic to provide the support to families in need from the basic life essentials to a helpline to support children and parents with their wellbeing.

“We are proud of our partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, to bring brand new computers to those in most need.”

Youth Action has been supporting children and families for over 19 years.
