A CRIMINAL who uses a bawdy alias inspired by a Monty Python Life of Brian character has been locked up.

Darren Paul Hyde, from Barry, who was listed on court papers as also being known as 'Mr Biggus Diggus', was jailed for theft, public disorder and breaching a suspended prison sentence.

The 35-year-old admitted stealing Corona Extra lager from the One Stop shop on the town’s Broad Street on June 20.

Cardiff Magistrates’ Court found him guilty of a public order offence on the same date.

These convictions put him in breach of a suspended sentence for a separate public disorder matter committed in Cardiff in April 2019.

Hyde was jailed for 18 weeks and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £128.

The court was told the offences were aggravated by the defendant's record of previous offending.

Hyde, of Williams Crescent, is known by a risqué name that Michael Palin’s Pontius Pilot refers to in the 1979 comedy film.

His repeated use of it reduces his Roman legionnaires to fits of uncontrollable laughter.
