POLICE were called to Lidget Green today after a vehicle "crashed into a bollard and building" in the early hours.

Officers attended the scene in Beckside Road at around 4.30am, after a vehicle reportedly hit a bollard before careering into the wall, near the junction with Wheater Road.

The car, reportedly a white Volkswagen Scirocco, hit the building and a doorway between the Porto Bello solicitors office and the butchers shop Amar Halal Meat & Poultry.

One resident, who said he was woken by the sound of the incident, said the car had been travelling in excess of 30 miles per hour when it crashed.

It was suggested the car had been turning into Wheater Road from Beckside Road but was going too quickly and crashed.

He said: "I was woken up by the sound of a loud exhaust and a car being driven quickly.

"Then I heard a loud bang, and when I went down I saw the car had hit the building.

"There was a number of males in the car and they all looked shaken up when they got out. It took out a bollard too so they must have been going fast.

"People use this road as a race track. Why drive along making so much noise while people are asleep, and why shout and swear in the street after.

"Police came and had a look but they didn't seem interested which was disappointing."

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "We were first called to this collision at 4.31am today and attended to investigate what had been reported to us."
