CONMEN still looking to make the most out of the coronavirus pandemic are targeting people in and around Lancashire.

The county council has this week launched a fresh appeal warning people to be aware of Covid-19 conmen, phone fraudsters and dodgy driveway repair firms following several reports of incidents.

In one case, a Burnley resident was threatened with arrest by a phoney HMRC officer who had called in an attempt to get money out of the victim.

Meanwhile another resident received a cold call from a man claiming he was disinfecting the outside of houses because of the Covid pandemic on behalf of the council. After sending the scammer away several times, the householder eventually allowed him in and he stole a purse.

A third scam which took place in Bamber Bridge saw a woman agree to having resurfacing work done on her driveway for £3,700 cash.

However all the trader did was paint the driveway black and disputed the money received, claiming they had only charged £400.

County Cllr Albert Atkinson, cabinet member for technical services, rural affairs and waste management, said: “It’s amazing what lengths these doorstep traders will go to.

“They come out with clever cover stories to get their hands on people’s money and, as the case of the Covid disinfectant fraudster scam shows, they are relentless in their efforts, sometimes coming back time and time again until they get what they want.

“Always say no to cold callers, use local known traders and use recommendation services like our Lancashire Safe Trader Scheme.

“Remember if you agree to the contract in your own home, you will, in most cases, have 14 days to cancel.”

Some residents have also reported being contacted by phone over the last few weeks by alleged representative of Age UK Lancashire wanting to visit to see if any help could be provided. These calls have not come from Age UK Lancashire, who are concerned that the caller may be trying to gain a homeowners' trust before gaining access to properties.

Residents are reminded to always check identification, as all Age UK Lancashire staff have a duty to carry it with them.
