Blackburn’s most dangerous roads for cyclists have been revealed in an interactive map.

Crash Map allows you to see where ‘fatal’ ‘serious’ and ‘slight’ cycling accidents happened in your area- the data for the maps are sourced from the most up to date police and government information.

The maps also show where the cycling blackspots in the town are, as well as the roads drivers and cyclists should take more care on when travelling.

Between 2015-2019 there have been over 120 cycling accidents involving pedal cycle casualties in Blackburn.

Out of these, one fatal accident took place in 2018.

This accident took place on Whitebirk roundabout on May 5th, after a cyclist was trapped under a vehicle following a collision.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was driven to the Royal Blackburn Hospital but died shortly after arriving.

A cycling blackspot in Blackburn is the junction between Plane Street and Beech Street. Two ‘slight’ accidents have taken place here- both in 2017.

Another road notorious for cycling accidents in Blackburn is Bank Top, where three serious accidents have taken place- one in 2015, one in 2018 and one in 2019.

The A666 is another road where two serious pedal cycle accidents have occurred between 2015-2019- one in 2016 and one in 2017.

This road has also been witness to nine ‘slight’ cycling-related accidents.

Other roads in the town centre where serious accidents have occurred include Railway Road (2015) and King Street (2015).

Joshua Harris, Director of Campaigns at Brake (road safety charity), said we "urgently" need more investment dedicated to cycling infrastructure.

He added:“Two-thirds of adults feel that it is too dangerous to cycle on roads- which is unsurprising given the threats cyclists face from fast moving motor traffic and with such limited space for cycling on our roads.

"We urge all road users to look out for each other, particularly around known danger spots, and call on those driving vehicles that can cause the most harm to always keep below speed limits and be aware of the danger your vehicle can pose to others."

Road safety in Blackburn

Blackburn with Darwen council has a number of measures in place to ensure the safety of cyclists and other road users.

Earlier this year, the council announced it would use Government funds to improve walking and cycle routes for residents.

Whitehall officials said they plan to create a permanent and safe walking and cycling route from Witton Park to Blackburn town centre.

Lancashire County Council also offer cycle training courses and have online resources to improve road safety for cyclists.

Blackburn city council has been approached for a comment about cyclist safety in the town.
