A man has been fined £1,000 for failing to quarantine after returning from holiday.

Police issued the 26-year-old, from Blackpool, with the fine after he failed to quarantine for the appropriate time period once he returned to the country from a trip to Tenerife.

Officers are now urging people to do their bit to keep the coronavirus infection rate as low as possible in light of the North West having some of the highest coronavirus rates in the country.

A spokesperson for the police said: "The vast majority of us are doing our bit to try and keep the coronavirus infection rate as low as possible.

"This includes adhering to self-isolation guidelines when coming back from a country that is not exempt from quarantine rules.

"We have recently issued a £1,000 fine to a 26-year-old man from Blackpool, who failed to quarantine for the appropriate period after returning from a holiday in Tenerife.

"We don’t take these decisions lightly but we want to be very clear that Lancashire remains in the midst of a pandemic.

"The regulations are there to prevent the virus spreading, protect people’s health, and keep everyone safe and we won’t hesitate to enforce where we need to.

"We will continue to engage with people and explain the rules, but we will enforce them and issue fines to people.

"We know the vast majority of people in Lancashire will do the right thing and will support our officers enforcing the law when the minority choose to deliberately ignore it and put their communities at risk."
