A WIGTON dad pushed over his partner as she was holding their baby child after she ruined his jigsaw.

Robert Barry Templeton, 28, admitted the charge of assault by beating after an attack on his partner Rachel Bewick on June 14 just before 9pm.

"The defendat has been in a relationship with the victim in the case and they have a daughter who was eight weeks at the time," explained prosecutor Diane Jackson at Carlisle's magistrates' court on Wednesday.

"They had been bickering for quite a few days prior to the offence. At about 8pm he went to bed with their daughter and the argument still wasn't sorted out.

"Miss Berwick tried to sort it but the defendant wouldn't talk to her. Out of frustration she told him she would push his jigsaw on the floor. He told her not to do it and as she got near he raised his hand."

Miss Berwick proceeded to push the jigsaw onto the floor.

"He then pushed her and she fell backwards and fell between a gap in the wardrobe and the bed. She fell with the baby in her arms," continued Mrs Jackson.

The court heard how in the lead up to the jigsaw being pushed over that Templeton had called his partner "fat" and also claimed she was a "bad mum".

Sara Budniak, defending, said: "Mr Templeton did admit the incident at the police station and was extremely distraught about what happened."

The court accepted the push was not intended to cause injury. Templeton, of Kirkland Avenue, was given an 18-month community order with a requirement to complete 100 hours unpaid work.
