FOOTBALL legend Nat Lofthouse was a winner throughout his life - even when it came to a charity duck race!

For in 1992 the then Bolton Wanderers president won a trip to Euro Disney in a duck race organised by Turton Rotary Club. His plastic duck, bought for a £1, was the first past the post in a 100-yard race along Bradshaw Brook.

Nat said: “It’s wonderful news because I will be able to combine the visit with a trip with my daughter Vivien to see my son Jeffrey and his wife Michelle who lives in France.”

The race saw 1,700 ducks take to the water raising more than £1,300 for the NSPCC with volunteers ensuring that they didn’t get caught up on the bank.

Terry McEwing, secretary of the rotary club’s community service committee, said: “We discovered that more money is given every year to the RSPCA than to the NSPCC and we thought it was time that we did something to help local children.

“We didn’t have a lot of time to organise the event but thanks to the generosity of Bolton people, the whole thing was a great success.”
