The English Football League (EFL) has asked for a meeting with Charlton Athletic's current and proposed new owners in a bid to resolve the club's drawn out takeover saga.
Manchester-based businessman Paul Elliott is looking to become the club's third new owner in seven months after he took control of East Street Investments (ESI), the company that owns the Addicks, from Tahnoon Nimer last month.
But the EFL has yet to approve the newly relegated club's latest takeover and confirmed it is still waiting for outstanding documentation.
This is the latest in Charlton's takeover saga which began with Nimer buying the club from Roland Duchatelet for £1 in January and saw local MP Matthew Pennycook step in earlier this month.
An EFL statement read: "The EFL has today written to Charlton Athletic requesting further information and a meeting with the club, the current majority owner of ESI and also the proposed new owners, as it seeks to clarify the ongoing ownership issues at the club in the context of the EFL Regulations."
The EFL added: "Extensive correspondence has been exchanged with the club in respect of outstanding information that is still required to be submitted to the EFL and the League will continue to work with the club.
"However, it remains the responsibility of the club and any prospective owner(s) to demonstrate that the requirements of the EFL Regulations are met.
"The club is aware of the consequences of not meeting those requirements. The League will not provide a running commentary on this matter but will update as appropriate."
Charlton said they had been expecting Elliott's takeover to be ratified by the EFL this week in a statement also released on Monday night.
The Addicks, relegated to Sky Bet League One after one season in the Championship, are currently under a transfer embargo.
A Charlton statement said: "The club expected the change in ownership control to be approved this week and the transfer embargo lifted, in order that work can begin on the squad for next season.
"Throughout the extensive communication with the league, the club has received numerous requests for information from the EFL and provided responses to the league as soon as it has been requested.
"Getting the change of ownership approved is the top priority of everyone at the club and there is no delay on the part of the club.
"The club will be in touch with the League on Tuesday morning with aim of getting this process concluded."
ESI ended Duchatelet's controversial six-year reign in January, but that takeover soon turned sour after Nimer fell out with fellow board members Matt Southall and Jonathan Heller.
Elliott then bought a majority shareholding in the company, but the EFL are still not satisfied after beginning an investigation in April into ESI's takeover at the turn of the year.
In their statement, they added: "The league is aware of the frustrations and concerns the current situation is having on all those associated with the club, including staff, players and supporters, particularly in recent weeks whilst it has attempted to try to work through the various and complex challenges out of the public eye.
A heavy defeat to champions Leeds on the last day of the Championship season saw Charlton finish in the drop zone, meaning they will be returning to League One after just one season in the second tier.
