THE swans at Crompton Lodges in Farnworth appear to be looking on in amusement at this scene that greeted them in 1978.
It may look as though fire fighters were trying to refill the lodges off Hall Lane. But in fact they were testing one of the reserve fire engines they had been given while their two regular full-time appliances were having repair work carried out.
They had gone down to the lodges to make sure that the pumps on the five-year-old fire engine were working properly.
It looks as though the swans approved!
