Police are appealing for witnesses after a 70-year-old woman was pushed to the ground in an attempted robbery in Catford, south east London, leaving her in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The lone elderly victim was followed by a young male in Lewisham on Friday, July 10, and hit her head as she was pushed by the assailant.

Police say the woman's condition has since deteriorated, and police are now appealing for any witnesses and information regarding the attempted robbery.

Detective Sergeant Ian Barnard, said: “Officers are extremely keen to trace this violent offender who has targeted a lone elderly victim.

"This is a deplorable crime and the offender needs to be caught and brought to justice.”

The attempted robbery happened around 10:15am on July 10, when the victim was followed from Conisborough Crescent to Daneswood Avenue in Catford, not far from Downham in Bromley.

The male, who was riding a bicycle, then pushed the elderly woman to the ground.

She fell, sustaining a head injury which resulted in hospital treatment, and the suspect left the scene.

He is described as a young black male of skinny build, tall, wearking dark clothing and a beige hat.

The victim's has remained in hospital due to her injuries, and police say her condition has since deteriorated.

She remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The Burglary and Robbery Investigation Team from South East BCU are appealing for witnesses to the offence or anyone who was seen matching the description around the time of the offence.
