A 19-year-old from Orpington has been given a suspended prison sentence and he ran from police on the High Street, only for member of the public to "put himself in harms way" and stop the suspect.

Bromley Police said George Ventriglia, 19, was today sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for six months, for possession of a hunting knife.

He has also recieved six points on his license for driving without insurance.

The teenager was arrested after he was spotted riding an e-scooter on the pavement on Orpington High Street on June 3, 2020.

Officers attempted to stop him, and Ventriglia fled on foot.

Bromley Police said that a "quick thinking and brave member of the public then placed himself in harm's way to assist our officer."

Upon searching the 19-year-old, police found a 20cm hunting knife.

Bromley Police added: "We would like to take this opportunity to again thank the public for their help and support."

On E-Scooters, the Met Police Service said it is supporting the government's trial of the new mode of transport, but have a number of points to stress to the public.

Firstly, only E-Scooters part of the official scheme are afforded exemption from current legislation, and those who do use the hire scheme will be required to be at least 16 years old, and have either a provisional or full driving licence.

"E-Scooters should not be ridden on the pavement. But you should expect to see them in the road or in cycle lanes."

They added: "E-scooters are mechanically propelled vehicles and anyone driving one whilst intoxicated may be committing an offence."
