HUNDREDS of heroes who have helped Bolton get through the coronavirus crisis have been recognised by the Mayor for their contribution to the cause.

The Mayor of Bolton has awarded more than 300 certificates of recognition to key workers, charities and businesses across the borough for their efforts.

Due to social distancing measures still being in place as the lockdown slowly eases, she was not able to hand the certificates over to many of the heroes.

But Cllr Linda Thomas, who was made the mayor in May, was able to visit her chosen charities Urban Outreach and Backup as well as a Sainsbury’s store.

She said: “As we are living through such a surreal time, I felt it was important to recognise all those who have gone that extra mile in putting the needs of others before themselves.

“I have been informed of many organisations and groups that have been doing wonderful work and initiatives without any thought of recognition.

“They just felt it was the right thing to do. Many have put their own health at risk for others.

“So on behalf of councillors and the town, as Civic Mayor, I thought it important to recognise this complete unselfishness.

“It is only a small gesture but after people have received the certificates and letter from me I’ve realised how much it has meant to many that their efforts have been appreciated and valued. This is very humbling in itself.

“The certificates have gone to organisations with key workers, charities, third sector, businesses, volunteer groups, faith groups and those who have had their names put forward by the recipients of the goodwill that has been so abundant around the town.

“It’s at times of crisis that so much generosity and kindness emerges and this pandemic has brought out the very best in many thousands of Bolton residents who have put others first.

“It’s quite a remarkable feat by so many thousands of Bolton people. This could not go unrecognised.”

The certificate recognises the “wonderful work” organisations and their staff have done to save lives, keep people safe and stop the spread of COVID-19.

It says: “On behalf of the people of Bolton I thank you for your selflessness, commitment and sheer determination to go above and beyond in this crisis.

“I commend you and offer my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for everything you have done.

“Your work now and in the future will benefit generations to come and will not be forgotten.”

More than 300 certificates have been posted to business, organisation and individuals by the Mayor of Bolton on behalf of the people of the borough.
