THE Abbey Church of Dunfermline will remain closed with hopes of a return in the autumn.

The Reverend MaryAnn Rennie sent a letter to update parishioners on Sunday with August the target for individual prayer to return at the church.

She said: "Many of you will know that the Scottish Government has given permission for the use of church buildings for individual prayer, and some may be wondering whether this is possible within the Abbey Church of Dunfermline building.

"At the moment, we have decided to remain closed.

"We have taken this decision because we want to ensure that everyone who comes through the door of our church building feels welcome and safe."

She added that, "God is loving and listening whether or not our church building is open", before stating her hopes that autumn could be the period when the public could access the church again for solo prayer.

She said: "Should this happen, we will be following whatever Scottish Government advice is required at that time.

"We hope that all those who choose to find solace in the church building will support and follow the directions given by the volunteers who will enable the building to be opened.

"More details of any openings will be given towards the end of July/beginning of August.

"Please continue to take care care as you enjoy the summer months."

The Scottish Government stated that from Monday, June 22, places of worship were allowed to re-open for individual prayer or contemplation, subject to physical distancing and hygiene safeguards.
