THE number of people who have died in Fife due to coronavirus is now 192.

Figures published by National Records of Scotland (NRS) include those fatalities where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

A total of 72 people have died in local care homes, which accounts for 37.5 per cent of all coronavirus deaths in Fife.

The majority comes in hospital where 104 people – 54.1 per cent – have lost their lives.

A further 16 people have died either at home or in a 'non-institutional setting', representing 8.3 per cent of the overall total.

The latest data available before the Press went to print shows statistics up until June 7.

The total of coronavirus-related deaths up to that date equates to 5.1 per 10,000 of the population.

Up to the same day, 4,000 people had died across Scotland after contracting the illness.

The death total is different from the count of deaths published daily by the Scottish Government because the latter is based on deaths of those who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The NRS figures published include all deaths where COVID-19 (including suspected or probable cases) was mentioned on the death certificate.
